Grape picking month announced at Pear Park

 

According to a spokesperson for PEAR Park, 320 acres on the south edge of Leesburg, all residents are invited to visit the vineyard there and pick a bucketful of grapes for home use between August 1st and August 31st. This year, in addition to the many Alachua grapes developed when PEAR Park was a UF Research Institute, two other varieties used in area wineries will bear some grapes. Residents interested in planting grages in the own backyard must pruchase them at commercial nurseries. Althought a new entrance off US 27 is being constructed a this time, entry for the time being is by a right turn onto Universitey Ave. For now a sign on the main Park Road will indicate were to park to walk the half block to the Orville Walter Grape Arbor.

At the same time residents are invited to pick a bucketful of grapes, they are also invited to check out the community gardens at PEAR Park. At this time approximaely ten plots are availalbe for leasing. To lease a plot call Gary Salzman at 323-6138
